3 Reasons Why You Should Write a Book
You might think that writing a book is too much of a grueling task to even try chipping away at. It takes time, diligence, ideas, brain power—the list goes on. You may also believe that it takes a lot of money to write a book. Not to mention the doubt about if it will be anything like you imagined it—and what if no one reads it? Sounds like the perfect recipe for why you shouldn’t write a book, right?
Wrong.
Here are the top three reasons why you should write a book, which I discovered through my journey to authorhood.
Reason #1: Your ideas matter—even when your doubts tells you they don’t.
Writing a book is more than just putting what you have to say on a page. Writing a book is about writing your legacy—what you want to give people after you are long gone.
Just as God formed us in His workmanship, so should we feel justified to believe that our ideas and creativity matter enough to put them between the pages of a book. Doubt will tell you you’re wasting your time, but God assures us that our talents and creativity are gifts to be enjoyed.
Reason #2: It’s not as expensive as you think.
Writing a book might take time and refinement, but it doesn’t cost as much as you think. There are services that will proofread, edit, and format your work to look professional at a fraction of the cost of a traditional publisher. Amazon will even walk you through the process to self-publish your book. Self-publishing through Amazon costs $0 upfront. Reason #3: You will sell copies.
Whatever your reasons for writing a book, whether it’s to tell a story for your family or create a children’s book for your grandkids, you will sell copies. Developing the actual book doesn’t cost a whole lot. Chances are you have a network of people at your church, job, school, and social groups. These are your first audiences. Get your book in front of people you know and hear what they have to say about it. You have to start selling somewhere!
Your creativity is unique. Even if the concept for your book is similar to that of a hundred others, no one has written a book like yours. The two most valuable resources you’ll spend on publishing your book are time and money. But neither of those will even come close to the amount of satisfaction you’ll get when you can add “Published Author” to your professional title. It is a truly humbling and rewarding journey, and I hope that you embark on it sooner rather than later.
